I have seen different kinds of reeds ones with the leather strip and ones without. What would be the difference?

leather strip: is generally placed to keep the reed from cracking - or to stop the cracks advancement
Not every reed needs an leather strip. Most of the time wan we make our reed's we place leather strip on them since we don;t know who will be playing the reed - if he can or is able to glue leather strip on it.
