Slightly off topic, but since Duduk.com sells Zurna as well...

Anyone have some tips on preparing new reeds for a zurna? I have a Turkish zurna that uses similar reed/staple setup as the Armenian version and have had to replace the reed. I bought a ten pack of the tiny oboe-like reeds the zurna uses but they must be trimmed, treated, etc somehow to fit properly and be pitched correctly. Though I've done my best to trim them to shape and what I think is the correct length/pitch, sanded and heat treated the reed in what I understand to be part of the preparation, I have not yet been able to return it to the playability it had with its original reed.

Any zurna players out there who can offer tips on getting a new zurna reed up to par?

Thanks!

Hello Ron

the Armenian zurna reed's are much smaller then the turkish zurna reed's, i don't have such material at this moment to make some for you..

you can use a fiberglass oboe reed, it will be just fine for most parts, specially if your practicing or working on your fingering.

Ron if you can't find a solution to you problem, buy some reeds from the net and ship the zurna and the redd's to us i'll have Albert tune and fix it for you

Good Luck

Thanks for the info! I have tried a synthetic bagpipe reed previously but the key was not a good match, I didn't know they made synthetic oboe reeds as well. I will definitely look into that! That would save me a lot of trouble I think as this is not an instrument I play very often. I really appreciate all your help!
