I'm making a short film about Afghanistan and I'm thinking about using Duduk as a theme instrument for the score. I love the sound and it has such a lonely feeling to it, just right for the film! My only concern - will it be appropriate? I mean, sound of armenian instrument - for the afghanian landscapes? Any suggestions?

Hello Vladimir and welcome to DudukForum
if it's appropriate for Jerusalem, Israel or Munich and Istanbul - i don't see Way isn't appropriate for afghanistan one think to know is the limitations of this instrument Please see the fingering charts of Armenian duduk http://www.duduk.com/chart/duduk%20fingering%20chart.htm it will help you more or less to know what music to use, since duduk is only a one and half octaves 10 keys Moses -------------------- ...: † :...Powered by Apricot Juice ...: † :...

Hello Vladimir and welcome to DudukForum if it's appropriate for Jerusalem, Israel or Munich and Istanbul - i don't see Way isn't appropriate for afghanistan Moses Thanks for reply, Moses. Actually, the opportunity to compose and perform musical score for the film by myself is one of the reasons why I want to make the film I will need some advice when I'm ready to buy the instrument (in a month or so), as I have particualr sound in mind. Something like this http://www.redsquarefilms.com/daysix.htm I hope you'll help me. Meanwhile I'm very interested in the subject in which movies duduk was used as a theme instument. I know Albert Vardanyan has composed score for "Ronin" (love it!!!!). I believe I spoted duduk in "Transporter" and other Luc Besson's movies, I'm not sure... Both of these films feature a loner as a main charachter, coincidence? |

I spotted Duduk in "The Passion of the Christ " (composer John Debney), Oscar nominated for Best Original Score. Several compositions by Peter Gabriel feature armenian duduk and kurdish duduk. Sounds awesome (in original meaning of this word

I believe a Duduk is also used in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe.
It used used in the scene in which the faun character, Mr. Tumnus, plays an unusually shaped fictional instrument. The Duduk is the sound played which the audience is tricked into believing comes from Mr. Tumnus's strange instrument. |

I was exposed to Duduk by the film Gladiator and the Xena TV series. After that I had to go find out what it was and so the obsession began!

Hi Vladimir
It sounds like an interesting project, there are many melody lines to use from music from Afghanistan, You can hear a little melody played on oudh by following this link:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTHc3NFEZ8o, where my friend Jassim plays a little afghani tune in the beginning 1 and ½ min I think from the start. It can be played on duduk, but you have to be very skilled, and maybe use a duduk in A with a duduk in D. Just to mention, there is no limit for the duduk or wright or wrong use for this instrument. The only limit is located between peoples ears, and I think there is a lot of limits out there in the world, so let music and art break down walls best regards and happy new year HRIMNIR |
